Fact-Checking Policy

Last reviewed: June 28, 2026

Accuracy is non-negotiable at Verdant Hearth. Every article goes through a documented verification process before publication and is reviewed regularly afterward.

Source hierarchy

  1. Peer-reviewed horticultural and plant-science journals.
  2. University extension publications (e.g. UC Davis, RHS, Cornell).
  3. Recognised horticultural references and textbooks.
  4. Government and regulatory agencies (EPA, FDA, EFSA) for pesticide and safety claims.
  5. Manufacturer specifications, verified against our own measurements where possible.

We avoid sourcing from other blogs, AI-generated answers, or unverified social media posts.

Process

  • Outline review: A horticulturist reviews the outline and flags any claims requiring citation.
  • Source check: Each factual claim is matched to at least one qualified source.
  • Editor pass: An editor reads for clarity, accuracy, and undisclosed bias.
  • Specialist review: Articles touching on toxicity, pesticides, or food safety receive an additional specialist read.

Corrections

When a reader or staff member flags a possible error, we re-verify against original sources within five business days. Verified errors are corrected immediately and a dated correction note is added at the end of the article.
